14.10.2024

Registration began Monday for ‘Stock Shark’, Estonia’s most popular money-growing competition. The game kicks off on 21 October, and over a period of three weeks the best virtual money trader will be identified and awarded a prize of EUR 5,000.

Popular among the investor community, the stock game will be held for the 23rd time this year. As virtual currency is used in the game, all investment enthusiasts are welcome to participate, regardless of age and previous experience. The aim of the game is to conduct stock transactions with virtual money over a period of three weeks and to grow your portfolio without risking real money. The winner of the game and recipient of the EUR 5,000 grand prize will be the individual whose portfolio has grown the most over the course of three weeks.

According to Nelli Janson, the head of the LHV investor community, it is gratifying to see that it is the ‘Stock Shark’ game in particular that is helping many investment enthusiasts to overcome their fear of getting started in investing, while generating a lasting interest in the investment world.

‘All you need to get involved in the stock game is determination. The period of three weeks is the right amount of time to understand how transactions are made, where to look for information to make investment decisions, how markets may react to various events, and how emotions affect a person’s behaviour. Through this game, so many subsequent successful investors have discovered their passion and gained momentum – maybe you are next,’ Janson said, adding that the U.S. presidential election will also have a big impact on markets this year.

One of the changes this time that USD 15,000 of virtual money will be transferred to each participant’s account at the beginning of the game, and an additional USD 5,000 will be added to the account on the following two Mondays. Previously, players received 10,000 in virtual dollars as seed money at the start of the game, with an additional 1,000 dollars being added to the account every day.

Of course, the game is also being played to be won, because the main prize is EUR 5,000. History has shown that anyone can win – both an experienced day trader and a young school student. It has also become increasingly popular to wage an investment battle within a company, school or group of friends, to determine the best money grower. To do this, you must enter the name of your company, school or other agreed name in the ‘team name’ box when registering.

In addition to the overall winner, the best schoolchild up to the age of 19 will also be awarded with EUR 1,000, the best money grower of the week with EUR 1,000, and the best young money grower of the week with EUR 100. In addition, a prize draw will be held between active players for Growth Account credits.

Stock Sharks will commence the battle on 21 October, at a time when the season for companies to publish Q3 results is in full swing. The game will run until 8 November, which means that the U.S. presidential election will also take place during this period. Stocks included in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index can be traded and the player who owns the securities portfolio with the highest market value, as at the end of the trading day on 8 November, will win the game.
