Travel insurance

Single-trip and multi-trip insurance

At LHV, you can choose from the following types of travel insurance and additional cover.

  • Travel interruption cover
Travel interruption cover helps in the event of a cancelled trip, delay or non-departure of means of transport, and interruption of a trip.

  • Medical assistance insurance (including accident insurance)
Medical assistance insurance is there to help if you need medical treatment for an unexpected health problem while travelling. Accident insurance provides an indemnity in the event of permanent disability or death resulting from an accident while travelling.

  • Luggage cover
Luggage cover protects you in the event of damage, destruction, theft, robbery, loss or delay of your baggage while travelling.

  • Liability and legal protection insurance
We will compensate damage accidentally caused to a third party by you or a family member travelling with you abroad. We will also reimburse your legal costs if you have unintentionally committed an act that has led to criminal or misdemeanour proceedings being brought against you in a foreign country, if you have been granted bail, or if a third party has made a private legal claim against you.

  • Rental car deductible insurance
We will reimburse you the excess of the motor own damage insurance specified in your rental car insurance policy if the rental car is damaged or destroyed as a result of an unexpected event (e.g., traffic accident, fire, natural disaster).

  • Event cancellation cover
If your trip is canceled due to the cancellation of the event that was the purpose of the trip (e.g. conference, fair, concert) or you are unable to fulfill the purpose of the trip as a result of an unexpected injury (e.g. participate in a sports competition), then we will reimburse you for the travel expenses incurred.

  • Strike, natural disasters and insolvency cover
We will compensate you for travel disruption caused by a strike, a natural disaster or the insolvency of the company providing the service.

  • Sports cover
The additional sports cover will cover your medical expenses if you take part in higher risk sports while travelling. You can find a list of these in the travel insurance conditions.

We will also reimburse you the costs that you have incurred during your trip due to, for example, the sports tracks being closed because of bad weather, or if your sports equipment is stolen or has unexpectedly broken.

  • Physical work cover
We will cover your medical costs if you plan to do physical work while travelling. For full information, see the conditions of travel insurance.

We always advise you to take out travel insurance before you travel, even if you have a valid European Health Insurance Card.

Remember that the European Health Insurance Card only reimburses you for medical services available free of charge to residents of that country, but these vary widely from country to country. This means that you may have to pay for things such as the cost of doctor’s visits, hospital fees, medicines, surgeries, and transport. These costs can be several times higher in a foreign country than in Estonia, which is why travel insurance is necessary even when travelling to a neighbouring country.

Choose the sum insured by travel insurance based on your needs. The choice mainly depends on how much you have spent on the trip before the trip and how much you plan to spend during the trip.

When it comes to luggage cover, think about what your luggage contains and determine the value of those items. If you are planning to do any shopping while you are travelling, include the estimated amount of this, as well.

We recommend that you take out travel insurance before you buy your trip or book your flights and accommodation.

Please note that travel insurance does not start immediately after the contract is signed: there is a 72-hour waiting period. You should therefore take out insurance at least three days before the start of your trip.

When planning your trip, make sure that you have allowed for sufficient time at airports. Check your airline’s requirements for how much earlier you need to be present at the airport. Also consider the specifics of the destination: can you expect more time to be spent on travel document inspection at this airport? Additional requirements and checks concerning Covid-19 vary widely from country to country and should be checked before travelling.

If you miss your flight for reasons beyond your control, we will reimburse the cost of a new ticket.

If you have taken out travel insurance and have also chosen travel interruption insurance, we will reimburse the costs of your trip if you fall ill unexpectedly. In this case, contact your general practitioner immediately to have the illness recorded. On the basis of a medical certificate, we will reimburse you for travel expenses up to the travel insurance limit shown on your policy.

The most common problems encountered when travelling are related to luggage and travel interruptions. However, the costliest insured events have been related to medical costs and transporting the sick person to Estonia.

If you get sick or injured while travelling, your health is the most important thing. To get help quickly, see a doctor at the location and follow their instructions. In the case of minor illness, pay for your own medical expenses if possible and submit a claim to us when you return from your trip.

If you need hospital treatment abroad, call LHV on (+372) 680 1122 as soon as possible. We will help you find the right hospital and arrange the payment of invoices.

Keep all expense receipts to get reimbursed after your trip.

Our travel insurance protects you against a wide range of situations when you travel, but there are also activities for which you should choose additional sports coverage when you take out your insurance. For example, if you are planning to go scuba diving, mountain hiking or sailing on the high seas. For a list of high-risk sports, see the Terms and Conditions of Insurance.

If you travel several times a year, each time to a different country, then it is a good idea to take out an annual travel insurance policy, i.e., a multi-trip policy. This covers an unlimited number of trips per year.

Please be careful about the length of your trip: the terms and conditions of insurance allow for a single trip to last up to 60 consecutive days.

Be sure to read the Gold Card, Premium Card or Platinum Card insurance conditions that list the types of insurance cover and the applicable exclusions.

We recommend that you order the bank card in good time before the trip, as it can take up to ten working days for the card to arrive in the post and the insurance coverage will only take effect upon activation of the plastic card.

If you ordered the virtual Gold or Premium Card, be sure to note that the insurance coverage will take effect 72 hours after its activation. With a virtual Platinum Card, the insurance coverage will take effect immediately after activation.

Travel insurance is valid with the following active LHV bank cards:

You will find the travel insurance certificate conveniently under the bank card detailed view after entering the LHV internet bank.

For the Gold Card, insurance amounts and compensation limits apply per card, except for the medical expenses insurance and accident insurance, where the maximum insured amount applies per insured person.
